MLA citations.Creation Myths Nine Types of Cosmogonic Myth When people think of ‘myths’ they often have in mind stories about the creation of the world. These are called cosmogonic myths from the Greek word cosmogonía where cosmo(s) is world, cosmos, universe and gón(os) is creation, genesis, production. Among the Learning Resources for Week Two are cosmogonic myths from these traditions: Norse, Greek, Egyptian, Babylonian, Abrahamic (from the biblical book of Genesis), Maori, Cherokee, Blackfoot, and Yoruba. In this week’s discussion you should choose FOUR of the cosmogonic myths (see below), and identify the category to which each belongs, according to Marta Weigle’s typology of creation myths. Weigle’s nine types are described in the Learning Resource called ‘Types of Creation Myths.’ (below)They are: (1) Accretion / Conjunction, (2) Secretion, (3) Sacrifice, (4) Division / Consummation, (5) Earth-diver, (6) Emergence, (7) Two Creators, (8) Deus faber (God the maker), and (9) Ex nihilo (Out of Nothing).
